Three windows, not one

Under Florida Statute 322.27, FLHSMV suspends at 12 points in any 12 months for 30 days, 18 points in any 18 months for 3 months, and 24 points in any 36 months for a year. The windows run on offense dates, so an old ticket can still be inside one of them.

Traffic school stops the points

Electing the 4-hour Basic Driver Improvement course on an eligible citation withholds adjudication, so no points are added at all and the fine drops by 18 percent. You must elect with the clerk before the deadline. CDL holders are not eligible.

Paying the ticket is the mistake

Just paying is treated as a conviction and the points attach. The election is also rationed: once every 12 months and 8 times in your lifetime. Save it for the higher-point ticket rather than spending it on the first one that arrives.
