Know the Basics

Details vary by state

A quick, plain-language primer on each area we cover, with a fact or two about the law behind it. This is general information rather than legal advice, and the specifics change from state to state, so treat it as a starting point.

Lemon Law

What it is: consumer protection for buyers of vehicles with serious defects the manufacturer cannot fix after a fair number of repair attempts.

If a covered vehicle cannot be repaired, the maker may have to buy it back or replace it.
Many lemon laws require the manufacturer to cover your attorney fees when you win.

Traffic Defense

What it is: challenging traffic tickets to limit fines, license points, and the insurance increases that follow a conviction.

Points from a moving violation can stay on your record for years and raise your premiums.
Many tickets can be reduced or dismissed through negotiation or a defensive driving course.

TCPA

What it is: a federal law that limits unwanted robocalls, auto-dialed calls, prerecorded messages, and spam texts.

Violations can carry 500 dollars each, rising to 1,500 dollars when the conduct is willful.
The same law supports the national Do Not Call Registry.

Personal Injury

What it is: the area of law that helps people harmed by someone else’s negligence recover their losses.

Every state sets a filing deadline, often two to three years from the date of the injury.
Many attorneys take these cases on contingency, so you pay only if you recover money.

The law affects everyone. Understanding it should not require a degree.
